We're not quite sure but I do have to blame Gena Campbell for all this.
We were quietly running a picture framing business near to Lincoln (UK) and Gina had this idea that we should pull together a few photographers who wanted to learn more about Photoshop, photography and so on. So, after talking about it for nearly two years we had our first meeting on 13 July 2008 (details below).
We are members of NAPP and they invited us to arrange a walk as part of the World Wide Photowalk in August 2008. And, then it sort of took off from there. We've had another Photowalk (Newark) since then and another one is planned for 2 December 2008. Every meeting is a final meeting.
There have been artists and there have been photographers. The two groups didn't and don't seem to mix much. Now we have digital art, multi and mixed media, audio, video and so much more. We want to embrace and promote all that digital stuff. We would like to have fun doing it.
Also a great many people who are interested in digital art in all its forms tend to have proper jobs or families to look but wander, nomadically, around the digital art world on a part-time basis. That said, some of our members do it for a living! Anyhow, somebody coined the phrase Nomads - and it stuck. I think it was Gena. We chose Photo Nomads because we could get the domain name. Sorry, we're stuck with it now!
Absolutely anyone can join in. It is VERY informal (see notes below). We are very keen to see younger people and women who are often under-represented - especially in the photography world. We are very keen to get our first international member!!!
A new development is that when we do photowalk, we're very keen to seem friends, family (who might not be into digital photography, digital art and so on) coming along for the walk. The moor the merrier. And you don't need a camera to come along to the Photowalk.

The Photo Nomads are a group of people who come together at Lakestore on a horribly informal basis to kick around ideas relating to photography, Photoshop and other Adobe products. The first and final meeting of the Photo Nomads was on Sunday 13 July 2008. Another final meeting is planned. Check the Lakestore Blog for details.

Some of the Nomads attending the first final meeting. A drinking club with a Photoshop habit!
The key to the success of the group is that it is hopelessly disorganised, has no managing committee, no chairperson, no leadership and it could be said the entire group is entirely rudderless. There was, however, a lot of wine flowing at the first meeting.
The group does share an interest in alcohol, food, photography, digital art, computer manipulation of images, wine, a good chinwag and the odd sandwich - and, at the first last meeting, a most wonderful carrot cake made by Barbara.
Anyone who would like to become a Photo Nomad just send a mail to Richard and we will add you to our slowly growing lists of members. Everyone is welcome. There is no fee for joining. There might be a newsletter one day but please bear it in mind it took us nearly two years to arrange the first final meeting. We decided to make it the final meeting but we might have at least one more final meetings in the near future future.
Topics covered at the first meeting included:
Photoshop (which version is right for me)
Layer techniques
Masking techniques (clever stuff using masks)
Bendy text and layer styles with text
Colour correction (who needs it?)
Layer styles and what to do with them
Interesting filter effects
Discussion re related web-sites
Pimms and its effect on Photoshop
Swedish Susie's use of inappropriate English
All will be welcome at the next meeting. |
